APPLICATION INFORMATION FOR Graduate Programs FOR THE

2013-2014 FALL SEMESTER

 

1) Application Period                                        : April 1-24, 2013

(Submission of Applications for Second Education Master Programs is to be made to the respective Office of Graduate Program during 3-21 June, 2013.)

 

2) Exam Dates:

     a) Departmental Exams/Interviews         : May 2-23, 2013

     b) English Language Placement Exam      : May 21, 2013

     c) BUEPT (B.U. English Proficiency Test)    : June 5, 2013

 

3) Program Application Requirements:

·         The number of students to be admitted and the application requirements of each separate program have been announced on the website www.boun.edu.tr under “Announcements” link.

 

·         As each program may have separate requirements, applicants must check the application requirements of the program to which they wish to apply. Only those applicants who satisfy all of requirements should apply to the program of their choice.

 

·         All applicants

 

o   must prove their proficiency in English through one of the exams accepted by the University Senate.

 

o   must have received the minimum score in ALES/GRE/GMAT exams in the score type required by the Graduate Program to which they are applying.

 

o   must have the minimum GPA required by the Graduate Program to which they are applying.

 

o   must perform successfully in departmental exams/interviews.

 

o   who apply to PhD programs must have received the minimum required score of 55 in ÜDS (or an equivalent of it, see below).

 

The above requirements are detailed below.

 

 

4) English Proficiency:

·         The language of instruction at Boğaziçi University is English.

 

·         Applicants must prove their proficiency in English (except those applying through English preparatory class) through one of the exams accepted by the University Senate.

 

·         Applicants, if admitted, will only be allowed to register if they proved their proficiency in English through one of the exams accepted by the University Senate.

 

 

5) English Proficiency Exams Accepted by the University Senate:

·         BUEPT (B.U. English Proficiency Test)

·         TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

·         IELTS (International English Language Testing System) 

·         The ÜDS and KPDS are not accepted as English proficiency exams.

 

6) BUEPT (B.U. English Proficiency Test):

 

·         BUEPT exam is conducted by the School of Foreign Languages (YADYOK)

 

·         Applicants who do not have sufficient TOEFL or IELTS scores must take BUEPT.

 

·         BUEPT will be given on June 5, 2013.

 

·         Applicants who wish to take the BUEPT must apply for the exam at the YADYOK Student Affairs Office prior to the exam date. When applying, applicants must submit the required exam registration form and proof of payment for the exam.

 

·         The Test of Written English (TWE) is also given by YADYOK on the same day as the BUEPT. 

 

·         Those applicants who have taken the TOEFL/IELTS and received the required minimum general score but have failed the Writing section may apply for the TWE exam at the YADYOK Student Affairs Office. When applying, they must submit their original TOEFL/IELTS score report.  Again, applications must be made prior to the exam date. Applicants who receive a passing grade on the YADYOK TWE are considered proficient in English.

7) USA TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language):

 

·         Administered by the Educational Testing Service of the U.S.A., the TOEFL is an internationally recognized English proficiency exam that is given weekly throughout the year in many countries. The announcement and delivery of TOEFL score reports can take up to 1 month. For more information on the TOEFL, please refer to http://www.ets.org.

·         Tests that are taken more than two years prior to application will not be accepted.

 

·         TOEFL TWE score report must be presented as well.

 

Minimum TOEFL scores required for admission:
TOEFL (paper-based test)                           550 + TWE 4.5

TOEFL CBT (Computer-based test)            213 + TWE 4.5
TOEFL IBT (Internet-based test)                79 + TWE 22

 

8) UK IELTS (International English Language Testing System):

 

·         Administered by the British Council of the U.K., the IELTS is an internationally recognized English proficiency exam that is given throughout the year in many countries. For more information on the IELTS, please refer to http://www.britishcouncil.org.

 

·         Tests that are taken more than two years prior to application will not be accepted.

 

Minimum IELTS score required for admission:

IELTS Academic Score: 6.5

IELTS Academic Writing Score: 6.5

 

9) English Proficiency Exemption:

 

·         Applicants who are

 

o   holding an undergraduate degree received from Boğaziçi University at most two academic year prior to application for Master or PhD degree

 

o   holding a Master degree received from Boğaziçi University at most two academic prior to application for PhD degree

 

are exempted from English proficiency.

 

·         The language proficiency of those applicants who are the citizens of countries whose official language is English will be determined upon an interview and a written exam, if necessary, conducted by YADYOK

 

10) English Preparatory Class

 

·         Candidates applying for the English Preparatory class quota of a graduate program

 

o   must have the knowledge of English at least at “intermediate” level.

 

o   must take the English Language Placement Test, which will be given on May, 21 2013.

 

o   who cannot prove their level of English at or above intermediate level cannot register to the programs that they are admitted.

11) ALES/GRE/GMAT Exams:

 

·         Applicants are required to have taken the Selection Examination for Academic Personnel and Graduate Studies (ALES), administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM), and have received the minimum score in the score type required by the Graduate Program to which they are applying.

 

·         Applicants may submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and/or Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) scores in place of ALES scores. 

 

·         Applicants who have exmatriculated from a graduate program and have later been readmitted to the same or any other graduate program, or applicants who have completed a graduate program and have been admitted to another graduate program (having taken no more than a one-semester leave from their program) do not have to take the ALES again.

 

·         ALES, GRE, and GMAT scores are valid for 3 years. 

 

·         When considered along with ALES scores, certain Graduate Programs may accept GRE and GMAT scores as valid for up to 5 years. In addition, some Graduate Programs may require ALES and GRE and/or GMAT scores.  Please check the application requirements of the specific Graduate Program to which you wish to apply for further information.

 

12) ÜDS Exam:

 

 

·         Candidates applying for PhD programs, as a requirement of Higher Education Council (YÖK), in addition to English proficiency requirement stated in item (7) must have received the minimum required score of 55 in ÜDS (or an equivalent of it, see below).  Foreign applicants must have received the minimum required score of 55 in ÜDS (or an equivalent of it, see below) in English, French or German excluding his/her native language.

 

Tests accepted by YÖK as equivalent to the ÜDS

 

ÜDS 55= KPDS 55= TOEFL IBT 66 = TOEFL CBT 184-186.

 

 

13) Departmental Exams and Interviews:

 

·         Applicants for Graduate Programs must take the relevant Departmental Exams given separately by each Graduate Program. Candidates may also be invited to an interview before a final admission decision is made.

 

·         The day, hour and location of which will be announced on www.boun.edu.tr under “Announcements” link. 

 

·         Applicants are responsible for tracking any additional procedures that might be necessary once their applications have been submitted.

 

14) Application Procedures:

 

·         Applicants must fill in the online Application Form through the Online Application System.

·         The access to the Online Application System will be open at 10 a.m on April, 1, 2013 and end at 5 p.m. on April 24, 2013. Applications made after this date will not be accepted.

·         Choose Application Form and access to the system using TC identity number or Passport number.  

·         Choose New Application and fill in the relevant fields on the form.

·         Upload a photograph.

·         Select the relevant Institute and Program, then enter Submit.

·         To re-enter the system and make any changes on the form, use the password provided for you along with your identity or passport number.

·         After making the necessary changes, enter Submit. 

·         Print out a copy of the application form and hand it in, along with the other documents, to the Registrar’s Office.

·         Filling out the form online is NOT sufficient to complete one’s application. The print-out of the form and the relevant documents must be handed in to the Registrar’s Office.

·         To apply to more then one program, the above procedure should be followed for each program, and a new set of documents must be added to each form completed. A separate application fee must be paid for each program applied.

·         If the application is being sent by post, the procedure given above must be completed and the documents must be sent to the Registrar’s Office within the application period. Application arriving after the application deadline will NOT be processed.

15) Admission Fee

 

·         Admission fee is 65TL. For candidates applying from abroad the application fee is 50/$50.

·         A separate application fee applies for each program.

 

·         Students who are registered in Boğaziçi University programs on the Spring Semester of the Academic Year 2012-2013 do not have pay the application fee(s).

 

·         All other applicants have to pay the application fee(s). These include Boğaziçi University students who were not registered during the Spring Semester of the Academic Year 2012-2013, Boğaziçi University graduates and outsiders.

 

·         Please make sure that you fulfill all requirements for the program you are applying to and that the Graduate Program does have a quota, before paying the application fee(s).

17) Application Documents

 

1. A completed application form with a passport-sized photo attached;

 

2. A certified photocopy of the applicant’s diploma, or for those applicants that have not yet graduated, an official letter from the applicant’s University certifying graduation;

 

3. An official transcript from the applicant’s University showing all courses taken and grades received;

 

4. For candidates applying for Ph.D programs with Master’s degree, an official undergraduate and graduate transcripts from the applicant’s University showing all courses taken and grades received;

 

5. An official document from the applicant’s University showing the applicant's disciplinary record (only for applicants studying at Turkish universities);

 

6. Two letters of reference (please note that some Graduate Programs may require three);

 

7. Official ALES, GRE or GMAT score reports (some programs may require both ALES score reports and GRE or GMAT score reports);

 

8. Proof of English proficiency (certified by YADYOK);

 

10. For candidates applying to PhD programs, the minimum required score of 55 in ÜDS (or an equivalent of it, see below).

 

11. Bank receipt that shows payment of the application fee.

 

12. Other documents required by the Graduate Programs.

18) Admission Decision

 

 Admission decisions will be announced at the University website after June 19, 2013.
